Inhibitory priming effect in auditory of the phonological mismatch length
نویسنده
چکیده
Three experiments examined lexical competition effects using the phonological priming paradigm in a shadowing task. Experiment 1 replicated Hamburger and Slowiaczek’ s [1] finding of an initial overlap inhibition when primes and targets share three phonemes (/b iz/-/b ik/) but not when they share two phonemes (/b z/-/b ik/). This observation suggests that lexical competition depends on the number of shared phonemes between primes and targets. However, Experiment 2 showed that an overlap of two phonemes was sufficient t o cause inhibition when the primes mismatched the targets only on the last phoneme (/bol/-/bot/). Conversely, using a three phonemes overlap, no inhibition was observed in Experiment 3 when the primes mismatched the targets on the last twophonemes (/ba t/-/ba aj/). The data indicate that what essentially determines prime-target competition effects in word-form priming is the number of mismatching phonemes.

Lexical competition in phonological priming: assessing the role of phonological match and mismatch lengths between primes and targets.
In five experiments, we examined lexical competition effects using the phonological priming paradigm in a shadowing task. Experiments 1A and 1B replicate and extend Slowiaczek and Hamburger's (1992) observation that inhibitory effects occur when the prime and the target share the first three phonemes (e.g., /bRiz/-/bRik/) but not when they share the first two phonemes (e.g., /bRepsilonz/-/bRik/...

The phonological priming effect may reflect basic processes in spoken word perception and has thus been a central topic of recent research. In this journal, Hamburger and Slowiaczek (1996) reported phonological priming data collected in a shadowing task. They replicated a prior study (Slowiaczek & Hamburger, 1992), but added new procedures to minimize bias. After observing inhibitory priming in...
متن کاملThe Effect of Phonological Awareness on the Auditory Memory in Students With Spelling Problems
Objectives: In this research study, the effect of training phonological awareness skills on the improvement of auditory memory in students with spelling problems in third grade at primary schools in Sari City, Iran, was investigated. Methods: The research method used in the study was quasi-experimental with pre-tests, post-tests, and a control group. The statistical population consisted ...
متن کاملAuditory morphological processing: Evidence from phonological priming.
Using an auditory lexical decision task, we find evidence of a facilitatory priming effect for morphologically complex targets (e.g., snow-ed) preceded by primes which rhyme with the target's stem (e.g., dough). By using rhyme priming, we are able to probe for morphological processing in a way that avoids confounds arising from semantic relatedness that are inherent to morphological priming (sn...

Introduction: This research was planned to determine some verbal-auditory skills (verbal-auditory short memory and phonological awareness) that have the closest relationship with speech and language development in 5-year-old children. Method: In this descriptive cross-sectional study, 400 children of pre-school classes affiliated to Education and Welfare organizations in Semnan city were select...
